How to Care for Your Hearing Aids in the Cold Weather

Today’s hearing aids are designed to keep you doing what you love, but there are some environmental factors that might affect their functioning. Cold weather is one of those factors! It can cause some minor issues with your hearing aids, but they can all be cared for easily by you. Here are some essential tips for caring for your hearing aids in the cold weather.

Check on Batteries

Zinc-air batteries are the most common type of hearing aid batteries. They are very sensitive to colder air temperatures and can reduce the available voltage – causing them to run out faster. We recommend keeping extra batteries on hand in the winter or switching to a hearing aid with a lithium battery.

Avoid Condensation Buildup

Condensation can build up within your hearing aid, causing moisture damage and the device to stop functioning correctly. Take time each day to inspect your hearing aid’s battery compartment for condensation and wipe it out to prevent battery corrosion.

Give Them a Break

When you come in from the cold, it is a good idea to take them out for a little bit. Taking them out allows the temperature to equalize and reduce condensation from forming.

Wear Breathable Gear

Wearing earmuffs or a hat in the cold weather not only keeps your ears and head warm but can prevent condensation and moisture from damaging your hearing aids. Make sure what you wear is breathable though so they continue to receive air.

Taking just a little extra care during cold weather months should help avoid any problems with your hearing aids. If you experience any issues, please contact the staff at any of our locations. We are happy to help you clean, tune-up or replace your hearing aids!
